Two Tone | Split Hair Color Correction on Daisy

You gave such positive feedback on Kristy’s Pearly-Bronde Balayage Refresh post that I’m back with another hair post for you! This time around, the hair session involves a fellow hairstylist and dear friend, Daisy Hernandez, also known as Daisy Violett on all social media platforms.

Daisy is one of the first people that I met upon re-locating to Southern California (SoCal), and we have stayed in touch ever since. When I first met Daisy, she finished up her makeup artistry certification and pondered what her next move would be. She loved makeup but still had the desire for more creativity, she just wasn’t sure how to translate it. We collaborated on a variety of photoshoots, events, and at-home content. Daisy handling the makeup and yours truly with the hair. There was even a runway show where we styled over ten people! During our collaborative time together we eventually discovered Daisy’s mutual love for all things hair. It was an exciting time, and she made the plunge into pursuing the full spectrum of beauty by attending cosmetology school (and later becoming a licensed professional). It has been my pleasure to watch Daisy experiment, grow, and evolve her skills. I’m very proud of her and am delighted to have been an integral part of her journey, since the first day that we met, and it ain’t gon’ stop! That’s what friends are for, right?

I’ve done Daisy’s hair many times -- from cuts to updos and even glamorous styles. However, I had never colored her hair before this appointment. It took over 8 hours, but that’s what a typical color correction takes -- especially when you want the job done well. We both love the results and so, fellow stylists and hair enthusiasts, here’s what Daisy’s first hair session with me was like! Enjoy!

(Much much love to Daisy, as always. If you’re in the Inland Empire area and are looking for a new stylist, be sure to visit Daisy atSassy Do’s Salon in San Bernardino, California. She is also available for travel, DM her for more information!)

BEFORE

Daisy came in looking for a touch-up, correction, and bold colour placement. She’s a licensed hairstylist who works full time, so she always wants to ensure that her locks are on point for her guests!

The ASK (Consultation Notes):

Daisy has a sensitive scalp, so she wanted a new growth touch-up that was off-the-scalp but looked as global and cohesive as possible.

Daisy had bands of old colour that had not been previously removed, she wanted to try and remove them without over-processing/lifting out her hair.

Daisy wanted the final look to have a two-tone effect (otherwise known as half and half hair) that was as close to pastel hues as possible.

The Placement:

Six sections off the scalp lightener application.
* Middle section resembles a mohawk but is divided for a clean application.

Finely sliced sections to ensure even saturation.

Mids and ends of Daisy’s hair were not lifted.

Bands of colour were “cocktailed” (lightener, hot water, shampoo) to remove unwanted tone and start shifting the depth of the bands of colour.

The Formula:

(1:2) Kenra Blue Violet Lightener and 20 Volume Developer
(1:2) Kenra Blue Violet Lightener and 25 Volume Developer
(1:2) Kenra Blue Violet Lightener and 30 Volume Developer

(1:2) Joico Vero Light Lightener and 30 Volume Developer
(1:1:1) Kenra Blue Violet Lightener, Hot Water, Olaplex no 4 Shampoo

(2:1) Generic Conditioner and Matrix So Color Cult Semi-Permanent Hair Colour in Aqua Bay and Lavender Macaroon
(1:2) Generic Conditioner and Matrix So Color Cult Semi-Permanent Hair Colour in Aqua Bay and Lavender Macaroon

The Tools and Styling Products:

The Technique and Process:

Daisy’s hair was pre-treated with Joico Defy Damage PRO Series 1 Bond Builder Spray for even lift and protection.

I started with Kenra Blue Violet Lightener and 20 Volume Developer at the darkest and least dehydrated sections of hair, at the nape area. Every single section was finely sliced. I used my Cooboard to provide ample tension to maintain close proximity to the scalp without applying directly onto it. The bristles/teeth of the Cooboard are essential to maintaining grip and distance.

I proceeded to work up the back of the head with Kenra Blue Violet Lightener and 20 Volume Developer until the occipital bone. Then, I changed gears and developer to saturate the front quadrants. I immediately placed these sections into a pop-up to ensure an even lift.

The front quadrants were lifted with (1:2) Kenra Blue Violet Lightener and 25 Volume Developer, starting with the middle “mohawk” quadrant and moving back-and-forth from each front section with finely sectioned slices that were applied back to back.

I also used (1:2) Kenra Blue Violet Lightener and 25 Volume Developer for most of the middle quadrants, I switched to Kenra Blue Violet Lightener and 30 Volume Developer half way so that the final sections had enough lifting power to catch up to the first sections.

A pop up was placed over all sections of Daisy’s hair and she processed for 45 minutes without heat.

After the initial 45 minutes, we still noticed warm tones that would prevent a pastel effect. (We still had the bands to deal with as well.) Daisy’s hair was shampooed with Olaplex no 4 and lightly dried with Dyson Supersonic to prepare for a re-application of lightener.

This time we only used Joico Vero Light Lightener and 30 Volume Developer.

While Daisy was open-air processing, I set forth on lifting the bands of colour.

Colour Correction Time: The bands of colour were hued from blue to green towards the mids and ends of the hair. I applied Kenra Blue Violet Lightener, Hot Water, Olaplex no 4 Shampoo to “cocktail” these unwanted tones and see how they would react without developer.

After 30 minutes of processing Daisy was shampooed with Olaplex no 4 and lightly dried with Dyson Supersonic to prepare for her Matrix So Color Cult Semi-Permanent Hair Colour application.

Upon drying the hair, we took a good look at the completed canvas to ensure an accurate reading. The bands were nearly removed, so much so that they weren’t as obvious and we were happy with the results. Especially since they were able to be coloured over in a lighter/more pastel hue.

The hair was sectioned off into four quadrants for a clean application. The Matrix So Color Cult Semi-Permanent Hair Colours were smudged into the rootage area, so that when the new growth came through it wouldn’t feel like a stark contrast. There would have already been the look of something “darker” there anyway.

I then applied with a regular colour application, using brush and bowl from top of the head to the bottom, with finely sliced sections. Utilizing a 2:1 approach with the Matrix So Color Cult Semi-Permanent Hair Colour. For every 2 slices of (2:1) Generic Conditioner and Matrix So Color Cult Semi-Permanent Hair Colour in Aqua Bay or Lavender Macaroon, I used one slice of (1:2) Generic Conditioner and Matrix So Color Cult Semi-Permanent Hair Colour in Aqua Bay or Lavender Macaroon.

Daisy’s hair processed for 20 minutes.

Daisy was shampooed with Olaplex no 4, conditioned with Joico Defy Damage PRO Series 2 Bond Builder Masque and Olaplex no 5 conditioner.

Daisy was styled with a voluminous blowout and waves that lasted for days.

What do you think of Daisy’s hair?

Daisy loved her revitalized locks and I’m so glad that we were able to snap some photos! (You have no idea how many colour corrections I have done without capturing some great content. It happens a lot in the salon or when you have more than one guest scheduled in a day!) If you aren’t able to schedule an appointment with me or Daisy, be sure to find someone who will personalize your service to YOUR hair and YOUR needs! If you’re a hair stylist, this is your sign to MIX LESS MORE OFTEN!

Peace, Love, and RAD HAIR
