Before

Kristy came in looking for a balayage refresher for summer. She wanted something that felt lived-in and luxurious while still being low maintenance.

The ASK (Consultation Notes):

Kristy has a natural wave pattern that she often embraces and wants something that feels lived-in, natural, and blended whether it’s styled or not.

Kristy had an unfortunate experience when she had her hair coloured last that resulted in a lot of damage, she wanted to ensure that her hair wasn't damaged again so she started using Olaplex shampoo, conditioner, and oil two months prior to having her hair colour-treated.

Kristy wanted to feel brighter, but not too blonde, with no foils completely reaching her rootage/new growth.

The Placement:

  • 4 zig zag sections that mimicked the flow of her wavy hair pattern and followed her whirl at the crown of her head.
    * All sections, including foiled parts matched the texture, type, and density of the hair.

  • A veil of hair was left at the top of each section to ensure that her rootage/new growth was left un-touched.

  • All the ends of Kristy’s hair were kept out of the foils.

The Formula:

The Tools and Styling Products:

The Technique and Process:

Kristy’s hair was pre-treated with Joico Defy Damage PRO Series 1 Bond Builder Spray for even lift and protection.

I started with Schwarzkopf Blonde Me Bond Enforcing Lightener and 7 Volume at the first two front-facing pieces as they would be resting the longest, they were hand painted and foiled away with Framar 5x11 Star Struck Silver Foils .

I then left the rest of the front panels alone and proceeded to foil the back of the head with fine to medium weaved teasy-light pieces using YS Park 102 Tailcomb/Foiling Comb and Framar Triple Threat Set Brushes, leaving out all ends of hair.

I applied the lightener with a back-and-forth emphasis from each back-section so that the hair lifted evenly until I reached the occipital bone/half way point of the back of the head.

I switched to Schwarzkopf Blonde Me Bond Enforcing Lightener and 15 Volume and continued to back-and-forth teasey-light until I neared the crown of the head.

I then switched to Schwarzkopf Blonde Me Bond Enforcing Lightener and 20 Volume and returned to the front of the head where I free-hand-painted (balayaged) the front.

I added in hand painted pieces with my Framar Triple Threat Set Brushes and wooden balayage paddle to compliment the natural wave pattern of Kristy’s hair, thus ensuring a flawless finish with any hair style.

Every piece of hair that was foiled was fully saturated thanks to Cooboard! Stylists’ — don’t be afraid to use your tools, that’s what they’re made for. I love that Cooboard has bristles at the top of the board to ensure that sections are as clean as possible. Do you use a board when foiling? Why or why not?

A pop-up was placed on Kristy and she processed for 45 minutes without heat.

I checked the foils to ensure a clean level 9 lift, I removed the foils and then massaged Schwarzkopf Blonde Me Bond Enforcing Lightener and 25 Volume onto all mids to ends of the hair for brightness without damage, approximately 10 minutes.

Kristy’s hair was shampooed with Olaplex no 4 and lightly dried with Dyson Supersonic to prepare for liquid toner application.

Wella Blonder Permanent Liquid Toner in Lightest Pearl was applied and processed for 20 minutes.

Kristy was shampooed with Olaplex no 4, conditioned with Joico Defy Damage PRO Series 2 Bond Builder Masque and Olaplex no 5 conditioners.

Kristy was styled with a voluminous blowout and curls that lasted for days.
