One album that has found its way back to my heavy rotation is Joey Badass’s 2017 LP “All-Amerikkkan Bada$$.” In 2017 this album was one of the only projects that I listened to. Logic’s Everybody was a close second during that era of life as well. In the words of Joey: “For everyone feeling the spirit of the times rn, I extremely encourage you to listen & SHARE this album at this time.” The first instant that I can recall this album was a steamy summer afternoon drive down the 91 freeway in Riverside, California. I distinctly remember thinking that Joey was so eloquent with how he articulated his feelings. He smoothly fused the flavours of nineties New York with shades of the Wu-Tang Clan contrasted with deflected emotive tones like that of J.Cole who appears on this definitive body of work. The amplifications of Joey’s storytelling are a perfect arrangement of sound that is transcendental, evocative, and equipped to take on the system. Joey’s ability to soothe you while incinerating your senses is evident on tracks like “DEVASTATED,” “ROCKABYE BABY,” and “RING THE ALARM.” (To name a few, the entire album is a master piece.) Truly, this album is a tribute to the black community and a missile to the existence of white supremacy. If you only do one thing today, listen to this album. Really hear what he has to say, because as he states in the above video — he has said everything that he has wanted to state on that record. If music has taught any of us anything, it’s that our ideals are tangible. Knowledge is power, and it is within reach for every single one of us. Black is beautiful, ethnicities are beautiful.
