Skincare & Beauty Professional Spotlight: Marieliz Hurtado-Breach

Beauty is as beauty does, this adage may seem underwhelming but the latter statement couldn’t be further from the truth. The beauty of a person is reflected in what they do; it is who they are. In fact, beauty strikes us most often in the most mundane of settings. The flash of a petal flecked walkway; or a friend whose smile dazzles an entire room. Beauty allows us to feel more intimately in any situation, in fact there is beauty in every situation. No truer words could be written about Mrs. Marieliz Hurtado-Breach.

I first met Marieliz while we were students at FIDM, the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. Marieliz is a graduate of the Beauty Marketing & Product Development major. She was the recipient of the Outstanding Student Award for her graduating class. Marieliz has a beautiful approach to everything that she does, her insight is preposterously meticulous. In the blink of an eye she has calculated outcomes that most people haven’t even fathomed, it’s probably why the intricacies of skin care are her specialty. She is fierce in her ability to always be brave, and to invigorate the best from those around her. I have found Marieliz to be a true leader. Full of beauty that radiates from within, she always inspires me with her natural aptitude for living one’s best life. I also personally rely on Marieliz’s wisdom with all of my skincare choices, I ensure to text her before I am about to buy something. MakeupGeek products have found their way onto my #shelfie because of Marieliz.

Not to mention, today is her birthday. Happy Birthday Marieliz! It is my profound privilege and pleasure to introduce to you, the brightest and most beautiful beauty expert of them all, Mrs. Marieliz Hurtado-Breach!

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “I was born in Venezuela and moved to Mexico due to the political situation when I was twelve. In Mexico I got my chemical engineer degree, I always loved makeup and skincare so when I wanted to pursue it as a career, I realized Mexico wasn’t the place. I started my first job after graduating selling chemicals. It was painfully boring and of course this was a male dominated industry, I was only 22 and found it to be intimidating. After a merger with another company, I left and my now-husband helped me look for programs where I could learn marketing in the beauty industry, that’s how we found FIDM and it totally changed my life when I moved to Los Angeles.”

What is your first beauty memory? How did it impact you?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “My first beauty memory was watching my mom pick up her Clinique 3 steps routine!Haha! She still obsesses with washing your face before bed, even if you barely put make up on! She bought my first skin care routine and since then I haven’t been able to  stop, she introduced me to this world that now I love and have the pleasure to work in.”

When do you feel the most beautiful?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “After applying my beauty routine. I feel like I took care of my self.”

What do you love most about your job as an Associate of Product Development at a top tier skincare brand?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “The constant learning, it’s not only keeping up with the trends it’s also learning how ingredients work, how they interact with the skin and what people are looking for. My job has given me the chance to keep trying products and never stop learning, that’s something that charges my soul!”

What is your favourite aspect about product development in the beauty industry?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “I know we are not curing cancer, but feeling good with your own skin is really important! It’s what gives us our confidence! Being able to help to put a product in the market that will bring a smile back, the confidence back, is my favourite part for sure.”

What are your career goals?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “First I want to learn as much as I can and keep learning, I want to go through all the stages of the industry that I can. From product development manager, sr manager, director, and VP. It is only then that I will feel that I have enough experience to become the person that brands come to ask for advice when creating products! The world has enough brands and in that sea of brands the misinformation has spread like crazy, I want to be a voice of knowledge on facts and not just trends.”

What is the one skin care product you can’t live without? Why?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “This is the hardest question, I’m between a good double cleanse or my vitamin a (retinoid). There seems to be a lack of importance in proper cleansing. Cleansing is really the step that will prepare your skin to receive all of the goodies that you have in your routine. So yes, I will say a good double cleanse (balm + gel wash cream)!”

What is the one makeup product you can’t live without? Why?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “Concealer !! I can’t leave my house without put it on it takes away your tired face 🙈!!”

Do you have a signature makeup look?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “Makeup - no signature makeup look, but it took me awhile to understand that makeup should enhance your beauty not hide it, or change your face structure. I like looking healthy and glowy, but believe it took me years of layering and layering makeup to understand that sometimes less is more! Sometimes if I want to look more full glam, I add a red lipstick. A good red lipstick is a staple in our industry!”

What skin care products should someone focus on in their 20’s?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “Gentle cleanser, moisturizer, SPF ! SPF is the key to prevent the signs of aging! The sooner it is used, the better!”

In their 30’s?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “Gentler cleanser, acid toner, moisturizer, SPF at your 30’s is where you can start playing with serums like vitamin c, niacianamide, etc depending on your concerns.”

In their 40’s?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “Gentle cleanser, acid toners, moisturizer, SPF, hyaluronic acid. At your 40’s we start loosing hydration so besides using a mixture of serums with vitamin c, active ingredients to target concerns regarding hydration is key.”

Skincare at 50+?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “Same at your 40’s, the difference will be the texture you want more emollient; think creams and products to compensate the lack of hydration and elasticity.”

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “A big bonus for all ages is vitamin A! It’s not only corrective, but preventive! It’s the most proven ingredient to help collagen production. The rule for retinoids depends on your age, this is typically the times, or days per week that you should use it! In your 20’s two times a weeks, 30s three times a week, and so on.”

How has the pandemic impacted your beauty routine?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “My skin has being dryer than normal so I’m adding more hydrating toners to keep my face hydrated throughout the day.”

What are your favourite wellness supplements?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “Omega 3, vitamin D and a good diet! The more we take care of ourselves, the better our skin!”

What is the one beauty trend you have to try?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “I want to try derma-planing, I’ve heard wonders of it! Especially that your makeup application is flawless after you’ve done it.”

What is the one beauty trend you will never try?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “Glitter, I don’t like anything with glitter especially the masks! Glitter doesn’t have any benefits to the skin.”

Anything else you’d like to add?

Marieliz Hurtado-Breach: “With all that is going on in the world right now, I just want to say this is the moment we need to push for change. We have to push for having a better planet to keep living. What ever little or big things we can do to keep pushing for change is the time to keep doing it, and not stop until we make it!”
