Like Mike: 5 Style Cues Inspired by Michael Jordan | The Last Dance

Have you watched The Last Dance on Netflix, or are sports documentaries not really your thing? I’m really specific with most sports related entertainment, my preference is usually hockey. However, when I heard about ESPN releasing a hotly anticipated Michael Jordan / Chicago Bulls docu-series, I had to watch it! As a young person growing up in the fabled nineties era, Michael Jordan was king. I can’t even remember the exact moment I personally discovered Michael Jordan, but he has always been a permanent fixture in my life and the lives of many. We can’t ever forget the significant pop culture impact of Space Jam or Air Jordans, right? After watching The Last Dance, I discovered that Michael Jordan was really an incredibly stylish fashion icon in his own right, alongside teammate and infamous bad boy, Dennis Rodman. Here are 5 style cues / items that you should be adding to your fall wardrobe inspired by the Jumpman. BE LIKE MIKE — the iconic superstar, Michael Jordan!

  1. BERETS are always cool!

Casual or stylized, a beret is so posh. It will elevate any look, and I was so amazed to see Michael Jordan wearing a beret in Paris, France (no less)! He looked so cool, and his take on this classic silhouette shows that berets are a genderless staple that stand the test of time.

2. Leather, leather, leather!

These days vegan or up cycled leather is the name of the game, but seriously the leather look POPS ANY LOOK TOGETHER. Most of us associate Dennis Rodman with leather due to his penchant for quintessential bad boy items, such as the ultra classic leather jacket. In The Last Dance, we really see that it’s Michael Jordan who hones in on leather’s ability to translate into any style. It doesn’t always have to be bold to be stylish! MJ lets the material speak for itself, regardless of the garment!

3. Three piece dressing! (It really needs to make a comeback, I might add!)

Obviously we know that Michael Jordan spent a great deal of his career on-duty. Most of us recognize the Chicago Bulls uniforms WITH Michael Jordan, but did you know that on-duty also counts as pre and post court appearances? One where they typically wear a suit and tie? I was fascinated with the amount of three piece dressing that Michael Jordan displayed throughout The Last Dance. From a suit jacket, vest, and slacks to a jacket, button-up shirting, and denim jeans. Michael Jordan was all about the full ensemble, especially during the early days of his career. Three piece dressing is actually quite easy to achieve, and really works well if you would like to build up a good wardrobe or capsule wardrobe. Essentially, three piece dressing involves curating looks around three pieces; so a skirt, jacket, and blouse is a good example of that too. Not only does it provide cohesiveness (even with a couple of contrast pieces thrown in), but it makes re-wearing items super easy as you don’t clearly look like you’re wearing the same thing all the time! I would love to see more people adopt this sort of ethos to their closets! Would you like to learn more about three piece dressing? Perhaps in a video? Comment and let me know your thoughts please!

4. Turtlenecks!

Let’s include mock necks as well, shall we? I love that even after all of these years, Michael Jordan will still effortlessly rock a turtleneck! He looks so SUAVE in them and I personally love a good turtleneck. Not only do they look incredible with suiting but they refine ANY look at ANY price range — not to mention they keep you warm! If you haven’t thrifted or purchased a turtleneck yet, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! Fall is right around the corner, perfect for an excuse to pick up a turtleneck and be as chic as you want to be!

5. Lastly, BELTS+DENIM = COMBO FROM HEAVEN!

Belts as accessories come and go, don’t they? It’s interesting how often they are en vogue or passé! It seems like every other season belts are in or out! Well Michael Jordan in The Last Dance makes a pretty valid argument for the relevancy of the combo. I don’t think there was a scene where he wore denim without a belt, AND I AM HERE FOR IT! When was the last time that you wore a pair of jeans with a belt? I honestly couldn’t recall this with my wardrobe, so next time you see me sporting denim and a belt you can thank Michael Jordan for that! How do you feel about the belt with denim look? Would you wear something like that? Why or why not? Your perspective is welcome here!

I also have to say that he made a duffle bag look so trendy, I’d love to see that accessory come back especially for the men folk!
